Our first day at Cardigan was so much fun and was such a great experience. We rode the bus to the AMC lodge and after what felt like forever we finally arrived. We met the group leaders, and then got to go inside and see our bunk rooms. Mine had two bunk beds, a small dresser, and a window that looked out to the AMC parking lot. Afterwards, we ate our lunch and changed into hiking gear. I made sure to wear extra layers so I would not get cold. We got assigned our hiking groups and went to our assigned meeting places. My group's meeting room was the mud room. We all learned that we would be going on the compass course and our leader, Sean, taught us how to use a compass to find different destinations. The compass course was like a scavenger hunt. We had to find different objects like trees, and then sketch them. However at the end of the course we discovered that this place had been an old ski hill. In addition to that we discovered an old rusted car at the top of the hill and a very old machine that we believed acted somewhat like a chair lift and would pull you up the mountain. Once we finished the compass course we went to the pond that was near the parking lot at the lodge. From there we sketched the pond and the lodge. Eventually we met up with the other two groups and together we went on the nature hike. Mr. Woolner told us a story about Hemlock trees as we sketched them. Once we got back we had spaghetti and meatballs for dinner, and the best part was that for dessert we got to have brownies. Eventually we all went outside for a night activity. We learned about nocturnal animals and bats. Once that was over we went inside and Mr.Woolner told us a story about a pirate named black beard. Finally after a long tiring day we were able to go to sleep. Our first day at Cardigan was filled with lots of fun and memories that will last a lifetime.
Our first day at Cardigan reminded me of human environmental interaction, one of the five themes of geography. Some examples would be that Because of the weather we had to dress extra warm so we wouldn't get cold, or the compass course where there were man made objects like the old car and pulley thing, or the little campsite with a spot for a campfire. Along with that we learned to be respectful to nature and not to disturb it. Furthermore, a definition for human environmental interaction would be, interaction between humans and the ecosystem.
